Double Pineapple: A Quirky and Playful Display Font

As I opened a new brand board for a local café refresh, I knew I needed something that would stand out. Double Pineapple, with its whimsical and playful style, caught my eye. This display font is PUA encoded, making it easy to access all glyphs and swashes, which is a huge plus for any designer.

Visual Characteristics and Personality

Double Pineapple has a unique, hand-drawn feel that exudes a fun and relaxed vibe. The letters are slightly irregular, adding a touch of personality and charm. The font's playful nature makes it perfect for brands that want to convey a friendly and approachable image. It’s not just a font; it’s a statement.

Performance in Branding and Design

I started by testing Double Pineapple on a logo concept for the café. The font immediately brought a smile to my face. It worked beautifully as a headline, drawing attention without overwhelming the other design elements. The café’s name, "Brew & Bites," looked inviting and memorable, exactly what a small business needs to stand out.

Next, I moved on to the packaging mockup. Double Pineapple added a delightful touch to the coffee bag labels. The font’s quirky style complemented the rustic, handcrafted look of the packaging, making the product feel more authentic and appealing.

In social media graphics, Double Pineapple was a hit. I used it for Instagram posts and story highlights, and it made the content feel lively and engaging. The font’s playful nature encouraged interaction and helped the café’s posts stand out in a crowded feed.

Readability and Versatility

While Double Pineapple shines in headlines and short phrases, it’s important to note that it may not be the best choice for long body text or formal documents. The font’s playful and irregular style can make it challenging to read in smaller sizes or in large blocks of text. For these purposes, pairing Double Pineapple with a clean, legible sans serif or a classic serif font works well.

For the café’s website, I used Double Pineapple in the hero section and for key headings, while a simple sans serif font, like Montserrat, handled the body text. This combination maintained the playful and welcoming tone while ensuring readability and a professional appearance.

Practical Guidance and Font Pairing

Before using Double Pineapple in final client work, it’s always a good idea to test it across different platforms and sizes. Make sure it looks great on both digital and print materials. For example, I tested it on a printed menu and a shop sign, and it held up well, but I did make some minor adjustments to ensure clarity.

When it comes to font pairing, Double Pineapple works well with a variety of typefaces. For a modern and clean look, pair it with a sans serif like Roboto or Lato. If you prefer a more traditional and elegant feel, a serif font like Merriweather or Georgia can complement Double Pineapple’s playful style. For a more eclectic and creative project, consider pairing it with a script font like Pacifico or a handwritten font like Dancing Script.

Commercial Use and Licensing

It’s crucial to check the commercial licensing before using Double Pineapple in client work, especially for brand identity, packaging, templates, merchandise, websites, digital products, or print-on-demand products. Ensuring you have the right license will save you from potential legal issues and give you peace of mind.

In conclusion, Double Pineapple is a fantastic choice for projects that need a playful and inviting touch. Its unique style and ease of use make it a valuable addition to any designer’s toolkit. Whether you’re working on a café rebrand, a boutique identity, or a creative studio’s visual refresh, Double Pineapple can add that special something that makes your designs stand out.
